Many "Churches" are just so reactionary to what is going on in the world. I've seen far too many church billboards advertising sermons about "The TRUTH behind the DAVINCI CODE." And more titles like that. I enjoyed the book for what it was, an engaging work of fiction.
In our American cultural setting, the DaVinci Code movie is loosing steam and its BUZZ but not so in the Church. Many churches are doing multi-week sermon series that are dealing with what they think are the more questionable aspects of this work of fiction. (Most totally miss the whole Goddess thing.)
I'm currently sitting in a church that holds to the modernist view of the scriptures and how we can "PROVE the TRUTH behind what a HERETIC like Dan Brown has written." I'm completely astounded by this statement and the reaction to this work of fiction. This sermon series is highly influenced by Josh McDowell's apologetics against it. (They are showing a video right now as I pen my thoughts.)
It is an apologetic based on the modernist theological approach. I just can't hang with this type of interpretation or methodology. It is just too sure of itself. What arrogance! But then again, much of our theology stems from reactions against what is called Heresy by those who are invested in the institution of the church. Not much has really changed.
Now don't get me wrong, I do believe that theology has some value BUT it is not the be-all and end-all of Christian experience. Theology does not change the heart of mankind, God does. As a Christian, it is our relationship with God that transforms us. This is a MYSTERY and one that cannot be logically discerned.
