I can't say that I see repentance as a requirement of forgiveness, but rather the result.

You mentioned that we need to "learn to forgive", but I think I'd take a different approach. We need to preach Christ crucified. Until we understand the work of the cross, and the effect it had on a fallen world, we will find it very difficult to forgive. Religion has taught us that forgiveness only comes when we "ask" for it, or "desire to receive it", i.e we must DO something to initiate it. When we see it that way, we think that if we must do something to receive forgiveness from God, then other's should have to do something to receive forgiveness from us.
